~Bad Company
Incident No 1:
I was having dinner with my family at this steam-boat stall in a hawker center. Suddenly, i heard a lady swearing in hokkien. She was a parent of a girl and a baby in a pram. She scolded her daughter in horrible hokkien vulgarities. I was taken aback by what came out of the lady's voice. The little girl is exposed to such an extensive range of vulgarities at such a young age. Being a little girl, I am sure she is unable to differ what is right and wrong. She might just grow up thinking that such vulgarities are absolutely normal.
Incident No 2:
I was queing up to get into a fitting room in a shopping mall in Orchard. There were a few people behind me. A middle aged lady jumped the queue to join her daughter. This lead to another lady being irritated and the lady confronted the middle age lady. The lady kindly asked the middle age lady to be considerate and join the queue at the back. The middle age lady obviously felt her ego being treatened and needed to salvage whatever that was left of her dignity. Thus, the middle age lady shot hokkien vulgarities to the lady. She continued on and on. It proved too humiliating for the lady that she left the queue instead. What was more disturbing was that the middle aged lady was accompanyed by her grand-daughter. Her grand-daughter felt that her grand-mother was not in the wrong and defended her instead.
With parents like this, who needs bad company?
